Mount Bromo Wildfire Prompts Partial Closure: Alternative Routes for Tourists

Viva Semarang, News – A wildfire broke out in the forest area of Mount Bromo Indonesia—specifically in the Bantengan Block—on Monday afternoon (3/8/2026). In response, the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Management (BBTNBTS) officially implemented a partial closure of the popular tourist destination starting at 10:00 PM WIB to facilitate firefighting operations and ensure visitor safety.

Under Official Announcement No. PG.17/T.8/BIDTEK/HMS.01.07/B/08/2026, authorities have restricted key entrance points and specific tourist spots until further notice.

Entrance Closures & Travel Restrictions

  Closed Entrances: Full closure applies to the Jemplang and Coban Trisula gates in Malang Regency, as well as the Senduro gate in Lumajang Regency.

  Open Entrances: Tourists can still access Mount Bromo via the Cemoro Lawang gate in Probolinggo Regency and the Wonokitri gate in Pasuruan Regency.

  Allowed Zones: Visitors are restricted strictly to the Sea of Sand (Lautan Pasir) area.

  Prohibited Zones: Visitors are strictly forbidden from entering the Savannah area.

Firefighting Efforts and Official Appeal

Joint forces from BBTNBTS and the East Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) are actively combating the flames across challenging terrain.

Due to limited vehicle access near the epicenter, personnel are utilizing traditional manual beaters (gepyok) alongside standard equipment. No casualties have been reported, and authorities have delayed assessing total land damage to prioritize complete containment.

"We urge the public, visitors, and tourism operators to protect the national park from forest fires by exercising extreme caution with fire usage for everyone's safety and comfort," stated Ir. Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, S.Hut., M.Sc., Head of BBTNBTS.

The partial closure remains effective indefinitely while authorities monitor ongoing suppression efforts on the ground. (TJ)
